Greencastle See Off Beragh Challenge
Saturday 21.09.2024
Greencastle are the first side through to the Intermediate semi-finals with victory over Beragh under the lights at Healy Park, following a lively encounter on Friday evening.
A tepid first quarter saw the game’s outstanding player Cahir McCullagh register three points with Callum Corrigan opening Beragh’s account.
The game burst into life when Sean McCann bravely dived low to punch Oran Treacy’s fisted centre to the net. Mark Rodgers and Connor Owens added scores in the following minutes as Beragh got a huge boost from the goal. In fact, Owens’ shot flew over the bar when the goal was gaping in the 19th minute.
Greencastle’s response was hugely impressive. Cahir McCullagh kicked the next four scores, two from play as Greencastle dominated. In the 27th minute, a super flowing team move started with centre back Micheal McCann before Ryan Gumley slipped the ball to Sean Warnock to fire to the net. Owens reduced the deficit to four at the break.
Beragh kicked three of the first four scores in the opening ten minutes of the second half to drag themselves right back into the game, two coming from Martin Rodgers before Ryan Gumley pointed to leave three between them with 15 minutes to go.
Connor Owens converted a free, and from the resultant kick out, Greencastle made a hash of it. Barry McGarvey was forced into hauling down Owens to concede an easy free and pick up a black card.
Greencastle showed real composure however and points from Conneely, and a tenth from Cahir McCullagh eased them three clear with six minutes remaining. Beragh’s superb effort was in vain as Greencastle held on for a three point victory. Fittingly, McCullagh kicked his eleventh of the evening to wrap the game up.
