In a game that swung one way and then the other Greencastle defeated Coalisland in the Grade Two Under 21 championship final this afternoon at Healy Park on a final score of 2-15 to 0-17.
Coalisland looked the side most likely in the first half as they took several fine scores and controlled much of the early possession. However they just could not manage to put clear daylight between themselves and their opponents and they were rocked back on their heels when the underdogs bagged two goals through Aidan Clarke and a fantastic team goal finished to the net by Sean Fox.
Suddenly momentum was with Sean Teague’s side and Coalisland’s hopes suffered a further setback after midfielder Padraig Hampsie received a straight red card just before the break. The Fianna went in at the break trailing 2-11 to 0-7 and looking a dishevelled bunch in spite of all their early dominance and possession.
However the young Fianna lads produced a superb second half display with Jason Carberry, Sean Corr, Cahir Quinn and Kyle Proctor leading the charge. With ten minutes of the game left the gap was down to two points. However Greencastle’s John Mc Cullagh then grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and along with points from Aidan Clarke and Chrissie Gillen ensured the title went to Greencastle after a very entertaining game.
