Grogan Goals Secure Ulster Decider for Eire Og
AIB Ulster IHC Semi Final
Eire Og 4-11 Creggan 1-15
Eire Of are back in the Ulster IHC Final for the first time since 2015 following victory over the club that defeated them in that final, Creggan, in Owen Beg this afternoon. The Carrickmore side hand five points to spare in the end but it wasn’t points that dominated this game. Sean Og Grogan smashed home four goals inside the opening twenty-six minutes to lay the foundation for the win. Everything he touched in the opening half turned into goals.
Creggan full forward Conor McCann opened the scoring in the 2nd minute ahead an excellent Oisin Daly point just a few seconds later. Eire Og hit the lead in the 3rd minute following a great turn and blast of pace from Sean Og Grogan before he turned the ball to the Creggan net, shortening the stick, to fire home from close range. It was a lead Carrickmore never lost.
Conor McCann clipped over a free for Creggan before Conn Sweeney split the posts and Ruairi Slane hit a brilliant long rang point in the 7th minute. A minute later Sean Og Grogan fire home a cast-iron copy of his first goal. Two Conor McCann frees either side of a Dermot Begley free left the scoreline 2-4 to 0-4 by the 16thminute. Then Creggan centre half forward Kevin Rice nailed a sideline cut and followed that up with an excellent goal to reduce the gap to just two points.
Enter Sean Og Grogan once again to smash another low drive to the bottom left hand corner of the Creggan net. That was his third goal inside 19 minutes. Another Conor McCann free was quickly wiped out by Conn Sweeney’s second point from play and another Dermot Begley free.
Seven minutes from the break Conor McCann slotted another free. Step forward Sean Og again. A long speculative ball into the box was clipped into the net once again by Grogan. A 27th minute point from Oran McCann and a 29th minute free from Dermot Begley concluded the first half scoring. Half time: Eire Og 4-7 Creggan 1-8.
Within three minutes of the restart Eire Og were ten points to the good thanks to another two Dermot Begley frees. They would only score twice more in the remaining 27 minutes of the second half. Conor McCann landed his sixth score in the 39th minute ahead of a sixth Dermot Begley free. Creggan would go on to hit the next four points via another sublime Kevin Rice sideline cut, two points from Conor McCann and a good score from Tiarnan McLarnon. Crucially they couldn’t get a second goal and it was left to substitute Aidan Kelly to land Eire Og’s last score of the contest seven minutes from time. The last two scores of the game came off the hurl of Liam McCann.
