Trillick ladies were forced to dig deep on Saturday when they out fought a physically stronger Lavey side at Killyclogher to lift the Ulster Junior title.

In a low scoring game of missed chances both sides enjoyed periods of dominance but Trillick’s ability to defend well collectively proved crucial in the end. Team captain Cathy Donnelly, Edel Gray, Nuala Kelly and corner back Katie Murphy were outstanding as the Reds repeatedly denied their opponents time and space on the ball.

Played in difficult conditions a goal was always going to be a huge score and Trillick came close on three occasions to finding the net during the opening half.

County star Emma Brennan struck the crossbar after fifteen seconds following a strong run straight from the throw in. Lavey also missed several golden opportunities including a harshly awarded penalty just before half time. Rachel Jordan’s well struck effort sailed just wide of the target and the sides went in tied at the break on a score line of 0-2 apiece.

The Lavey first half scores came courtesy of Emma Plunkett and Catriona Smith almost twenty minutes apart while Caitlin Kelly and Fiona Owens accounted for the Trillick brace.

Playing into the breeze after the restart Trillick deployed Edel Gray deep in defence and her positioning sense and ability to read the game proved crucial. This switch allowed Nuala Kelly and Cathy Donnelly to push forward at key times as Lavey threw everything at the Reds defence.

Once again scores were hard to come by but a brace of Emma Brennan points put Trillick two up after ten minutes of the second half. However two well struck frees from the foot of Rachel Jordan levelled the game again and with just over ten minutes remaining it was anybody’s game.

However Lavey were forced to finish the game with fourteen players following a straight red card for wing back Siobhan Jordan following an off the ball incident.

Trillick made good use of the extra player recycling possession to alleviate danger. Space was at a premium inside both defences but Emma Brennan and Fiona Owens managed to wriggle free to kick the all important points that secured the title. They were however indebted to the bravery of Edel Gray who made one fantastic block and several timely interceptions when the Cavan girls went for broke late on.

Final Score: Trillick 0-6, Lavey 0-4
