HANDBALL| Record Successes For Tyrone Handball.
Monday 24.08.2015
Tyrone Handballers have enjoyed a record level of success at last week’s World Handball Championships in Calgary, with a total of 12 Gold & 14 Silver medals making its way back to the Red Hand County.
The format of the two week long Championships sees the One-Wall events played during the first week, whilst the Four-Wall events take place during the second week. One-Wall & Four-Wall Handball are very different, with totally different courts, balls, and tactics required. Therefore it is worth noting that Tyrone had numerous young players win medals in both codes of the game, highlighting the quality of Handball coming through in the county at present.
Johnny Woods had a standout Championship, remarkably winning 19&U Singles titles in both One-Wall & Four-Wall, whilst also teaming up with Breacadh club mate Pol Clarke to seal the 19&U Four Wall Doubles title.
Carrickmore’s Munroe family came home with an astonishing 7 medals. Eldest brother Cormac took home two golds (15&U Doubles One-Wall & Four Wall having paired up with Team Ireland’s Tiarnan Agnew from Clare. Cormac almost added a third gold but fell at the final stage in the 15&U One-Wall singles grade to Irish champion Peter Donohoe.
Younger brother Cahir took gold in the 15&U One-Wall Doubles with Galway’s Jason O’Toole, whilst the same pairing fell in a final in the same grade of the Four Wall division. Clodagh then sealed the remaining two medals for the family in the One-Wall code, winning gold in the 11&U Singles, and silver in the 11&U Doubles.
In the Four Wall championship there was further success in the Girls 11&U grade, with Cloda McNamee & Dearbhail Fox winning the Doubles, with the former also taking silver in the Singles.
Sean Kerr teamed up with long time rival at National level, Daniel Kavanagh of Wexford to compete in the 17&U Doubles grades, and the duo proved formidable winning gold in the Four-Wall & silver in the One-Wall.
Loughmacrory’s Antoin Fox & Carrickmore’s Lorcan McBride paired up in the 15&U doubles grade, and came away with two silver medals each for both the One-Wall & Four-Wall events. A 4th medal for the Fox family was sealed when Mairead took silver in the 13&U Four-Wall Doubles.
Finishing off the gold medal roundup was Michelle Warren who claimed the Ladies C One-Wall Doubles.
Elsewhere there was further silver medals all in the Four-Wall championships for Gabhain McCrystal (Men’s A Singles), Shane O’Neill (Men’s A Doubles) & Mark McCartan (Masters Doubles), and for Eilise McCrory who took silver in the Girls 17&U One-Wall Doubles.
