The Tyrone juvenile handball squad heads to Belfast this weekend with high hopes for the 2016 Ulster juvenile 40×20 championships.

The county has achieved unprecedented success at provincial and national level in recent years and another strong squad of boys and girls has been selected and prepared for the campaign ahead.

A total of 36 players will represent Tyrone in a packed programme of Ulster championship matches on Sunday, with eight counties set to be strongly represented at three West Belfast venues, Rossa, Gort na Mona and Colaiste Feirste.

The action will get underway at 10am and will continue right through to 9pm, and by the end of the day the Ulster finalists should be confirmed in all 24 singles and doubles championships.

Leading the Tyrone challenge this year will be last year’s All-Ireland under-14 and under-15 singles champions, Antoin Fox and Lorcan McBride, who last weekend were again crowned All-Ireland junior colleges doubles champions, plus Cormac Munroe who was runner-up in the All-Ireland under-16 singles final last year.

This time around, Cormac will team up with his clubmate Lorcan McBride for a serious crack at the under-16 doubles crown, with Loughmacrory’s Antoin Fox going for singles glory at under-16 level.

It is arguably the strongest under-16 team the county has ever sent out for the championship, emphasised by the fact that players like Darragh Canavan, Ronan Curran and Shane Grimes, who all starred in All-Ireland championships last year, were also eligible for the county under-16 team this season.

The Tyrone girls under-16 team is also a formidable combination, with Elizabeth McGarvey representing Tyrone in the singles, and recent county singles finalists, Caitlin Conway and Ciara Mullin, joining forces for the doubles. Michaela McCartan, All-Ireland under-15 singles finalist last year, just missed out on the Tyrone under-16 girls team this season, again emphasising how strong Tyrone are in this age group.

Other young stars representing Tyrone this weekend who’ve already made a big impact in recent seasons and have big hopes for 2016 include Ciaran Cuddy, Mairead Fox, Cahir Munroe, Clodagh Munroe, Jonathan Owens, Cloda McNamee and Dearbhail Fox, while the boys under-12 team will all make their intercounty debuts this weekend and there is great potential in the young trio of Eoin McElholm, Conor Owens and Patrick McCann.

Tyrone will meet Armagh in all competitions in the early part of Sunday’s programme, with the winners going on to meet Donegal or Antrim at the semi-final stage later in the day.

Whoever prevails in Sunday’s programme will then go forward to represent Tyrone on Ulster final day a week later in Kingscourt.
