Heartbreaking Loss For Holy Trinity

St Malachys claimed this year’s Corn Colmcille (13.5) competition holding off a heroic second half comeback from Holy Trinity in a highly entertaining final played in Davitt Park, Lurgan. Sadly from a HTC point of view they came up one point short.
The lively Matty Coyle got the game’s first score for Holy Trinity but this was immediately cancelled out by Setanta Laverty, son of Down boss, Conor. The Cookstown school played second fiddle to the Castlewellan lads as they kicked four further points, with midfielder Luke Rice kicking two of them.
At the end of the first quarter, Holy Trinity gained a lifeline when Malachy’s keeper Jude McKee failed to deal with Jack McGuigan’s high ball and Rory Grimes reacted quickest to fire the rebound home. Conn McKeown levelled the game with 20 minutes played before St. Malachys once again extended their advantage with points from Laverty, Padraig Bannon, and a brace from the excellent Thomas Kane. Late scores from Tiernan Lagan and Senan Devlin halved the deficit at the interval.
St Malachys started the second half in the best possible manner. Thomas Kane weaved through the Cookstown defence before calmly firing to the net. Minutes later a long-range free from Bannon left six between them.
Holy Trinity responded with a free from McGuigan and a well struck McKeown point. The comeback needed a spark, and it arrived in the 45th minute when Michael Herron drove through the middle before drilling the ball to the net for a brilliant goal. Holy Trinity almost snatched another major but McKee produced a great double save. Holy Trinity were now in the ascendancy, and a third from Conn McKeown tied it up with ten minutes remaining. Luke Rice edged Castlewellan back in front with fine strike from distance in the 51st minute. Despite Holy Trinity throwing everything at St Malachys, the Down men stood firm with Luke Rice’s point proving to be the vital score.
