Johnny Woods and Ryan Mullan made history last Saturday by becoming the first ever Tyrone partnership to win the GAA Handball All Ireland Minor 40×20 Doubles championship title. While the county have contested five finals in the grade in the past, this is the first occasion the title has been secured and has cemented a brilliant season in the small court for the county.

In a tough two hour encounter with Clare’s Fergal Coughlan and Jason Loughnane, the Tyrone lads fell to a 21-17 defeat in the opening game. However, an explosive start to the second by Woods and Mullan saw them open up a 7-0 lead and they maintained their advantage all through to force a tie-breaker with a 21-10 win in the second.

The third game ebbed to and fro for much of the way and Tyrone did lead by 10-7 midway through. However, it looked ominous when Clare then took control and moved into a 16-10 lead. But, in typical determined fashion, Mullan and Woods dug deep and clawed their way back to level at 16-16 before going on to run out winners by 21-17.

A fantastic title success for the newly crowned All Ireland Minor doubles champions, and a brilliant clean sweep in the grade by Johnny Woods. The duo were of course adding to their Under 16 doubles win from 2012.

Result:

Saturday 5th April 2014, in St. Coman’s, Roscommon: Minor Doubles 40×20 All Ireland Championship Final: Johnny Woods & Ryan Mullan (Tyrone) dft Fergal Coughlan & Jacob Loughnane (Clare) 17-21, 21-10, 21-17.
