Tyrone won the Nicky Rackard Cup for the first time with a 1-17 to 1-16 win over Fingal at Croke Park on Saturday afternoon.

Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half Tyrone’s chances of victory were boosted when Christopher Cross scrambled home a goal in the 24th minute. Damian Casey once again showed his importance to the Red Hands but seven points from JM Sheridan ensured Fingal remained in the game.

Gerard Gilmore nudged the Red Hands into a 1-08 to 0-10 interval lead and at one stage midway through the second half they had moved eight clear. Mattie Lennon’s side were playing superbly well with Gilmore and Casey leading the way. With time almost up however Dave Smyth pulled back a Fingal goal to set up a dramatic finish. Tyrone were not to be denied and held on to win by a point and make history for the county.
