Coalisland 1-14 Ardboe 0-12

O’Neill Cup holders Coalisland served notice that they won’t be giving up their title lightly after an impressive second half display saw them overcome Ardboe at Arthur Mallon Park in Edendork on Sunday evening.

Ardboe led 0-7 to 0-6 at the end of a first half that was played at a frantic pace from first whistle to last. The Rossas were out of the traps quickly with Kyle Coney and Shay McGuigan both converting frees before Cathaoir Quinn opened the holders’ account with an outstanding effort from out on the right wing. McGuigan then landed a superb free from a difficult angle and Coney followed up with another score from a placed ball as well for a 0-4 to 0-1 advantage.

The Fianna were slow to get into their stride but a Brian Toner free got them up and running before Plunkett Kane charged through from midfield for an eye-catching point. Jordan Bell and Toner exchanged points as did Mattie Bell and Quinn to leave the Loughshore men just ahead at 0-6 to 0-5. Coney’s third point of the half from a free put Ardboe two clear again but Toner then kicked his third score as well to bring an end to an entertaining half.

Within forty seconds of the restart Toner had levelled matters and that was an early sign of things to come. Man of the match Quinn then pointed via the bar and while Coney levelled matters for Ardboe it was all downhill for them after that. Bailey Leonard, Toner and the Quinn brothers Cathaoir and Tiarnan all registered as the Fianna moved 0-12 to 0-8 in front at the end of the third quarter.

Coney kicked a fine point from play from out on the left wing but it was only temporary respite for Ardboe as Coalisland continued to dictate matters. Plunkett Kane and substitute Conor Doyle added points with Michael Cassidy replying at the other end for the Rossas. In the 58th minute Coalisland struck for a brilliant goal when Kane burst through and offloaded to substitute Sean Corr who showed great vision to flick the ball to Cathaoir Quinn and he did the rest with a confident finish to the net past keeper Roman Cassidy. Coney and Bell had late points for Ardboe but sandwiched in between those scores they had substitute Tommy McGuigan sent off as the holders advanced.
