Derry 2-10 Tyrone 1-8

Tyrone crashed out of the Electric Ireland minor championship at the semi final stage when they lost by five points to a good Derry side at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh on Sunday evening.

Conleth McGuckin opened the scoring for Derry in the 2nd minute but Tyrone came straight down the field for Shea Daly to strike a fine equaliser with the outside of his boot.

In the 4th minute Derry got in for a brilliant goal when a defence splitting pass from McGuckin put Enda Downey through on goal and the full forward made no mistake with a blistering finish to the roof of the net past stranded keeper Mark McGale.

Downey and Stephen Grogan exchanged points from frees before McGuckin weighed in with a score from a placed ball as well. Tyrone midfielder Michael McGleenan then powered through for a point and when Mark Hayes pointed with his weaker left foot the deficit was trimmed to two.

Derry though looked the better side and two Downey frees either side of one from McGuckin put them five clear. Grogan knocked over two frees but Derry replied with a superb effort from play from Eunan McElhennon. On the stroke of halftime Derry keeper Aidan Gillan came to his side’s rescue with a great save to deny Hayes to leave it 1-7 to 0-6.

Derry got off to a great start in the second half when in the first attack Tyrone keeper McGale spilled a high ball in from Iarlaith Donaghy and McGuckin pounced to send the ball to the net.

Three minutes later though Tyrone got back into the game in similar circumstances when Gillan failed to hold the ball and Grogan palmed it to the net.

The keeper made amends though when saving from McGleenan in the next attack. Substitute Shane Murphy left just a score between the sides when he converted a “45”.

Derry though finished the game strongly with points from Niall Doyle, McGuckin and PJ McAleese to book a final date with Monaghan.
