A depleted Tyrone senior hurling team lost heavily to Mayo in Saturday’s Nicky Rackard Cup match at Healy Park on a final score line of Mayo 1-24 Tyrone 0-9.

Mattie Lennon’s side went into Saturday’s game minus a number of key players against a team packed with experience and quality. It was a day Tyrone needed everything to go right for them but played in difficult conditions they were just second in too many challenges and Mayo made them pay.

Unfortunately for the Red Hands ace marksman Damian Casey lacked his normal accuracy from frees meaning a number of very good scoring opportunities went abegging.

Mayo hit the first four points of the game inside the opening six minutes with Shane Boland, Eoin Delaney, Cathal Freeman and Jason Coyle on target. Damian Casey landed a brace of frees but Mayo were going through the gears smoothly and they hit another five points without reply to leave themselves in complete control leading 0-10 to 0-2 with five minutes of the half remaining. Boland, Corey Scahill, Coyne, Adrian Philips and Sean Mulroy were all on target before the break as the westerners showed their class. Boland (2), Scahill and full forward Brian Morley scored again to stretch their lead further with Tyrone’s only addition to their total being a 32nd minute point from Keifer Morgan.

The second half saw Mayo produce some fine hurling in spite of the slippery conditions. Corner forwards Delaney and Coyne combined for the latter to hit the net immediately after the restart and any hopes of a Tyrone comeback evaporated. Damian Casey managed to hit four second half points while Branan Molloy and John Mc Gurk also found the target but Tyrone never really troubled Mayo who produced a dominant second half adding 1-9 to their to their first half tally. Sean Kenny, Boland and second half subs Cormac Philips and Sean Reagan were among the points as Mayo cruised to a comfortable win.

Final score: Tyrone 0-9, Mayo 1-24.
