Hurlers Lose Narrowly In Opener
Sunday 26.01.2025
Tyrone senior hurlers produced a battling display at. Healy Park on Saturday evening but lost out narrowly 1-13 to 0-14 to a Derry side for whom Christy Mc Naughton and John Mullan were very impressive particularly in the second half.
The home side played wind assisted in the first period but they found the battling approach of the Derry defence hard to cope with. Tyrone were overly dependant on the striking accuracy of Eire Og’s Aidan Kelly who finished the first half with all seven of his side’s points with only one coming from play.
Derry looked sharp and committed throughout keeping in touch with Tyrone on the scoreboard and taking the lead when Gerard Bradley took a pass from John Mullan and finished expertly to the back of the net. Full forward Mc Naughton rounded off the scoring in the opening half with a fine score just before the break to send the sides in at the break with Derry leading 1-6 yo 0-7.
Tyrone had the elements to contend with in the second half and a very determined Derry side hoping to build on their first half lead. The Oak Leafers hit three points early in the second half from Mc Naughton (2) and Shea Cassidy to move five clear and things looked bleak for Stephen Mc Garry’s side. However the home side dug deep and pushed Derry all the way to the end with scores from the fleet footed Aidan Woods, Aidan Kelly , Mickey Little and Mark Mc Cann. However full forward Mc Naughton kept the scoreboard turning for Derry with a couple of super scores to leave the final score Tyrone 0-13. Derry 0-14.
