Gary Fox was sprung from the bench today and his 1-5 ensured Carrickmore Eire Og made it through to the semi-finals of the Ulster club hurling championship after the Tyrone side defeated a battling Keady 1-18 to 0-16 in a pulsating tie at the Armagh club’s home patch.

Carrickmore had led by five points at the break hitting seven points without reply in the first half as they ramped up the heat against their hosts.  The Eire Ogs appeared in total control as Aiden Kelly and Conor Grogan hit 0-2 each and Johnny Munroe, Paul Hughes and Peader Daly  also found the target.

The Tyrone champions suffered a blow when Dermott Begley was withdrawn after shipping a heavy hit. Goalkeeper Conor McElhatton made a stunning double save from James King and Paul Breento help keep his team in the ascendancy as Keady threatened on several occasions.  However they were hugely reliant on frees to complete their first half tally of 0-5.

Keady powered back into the game in the second half with Aiden Kelly Carrickmore’s only point scorer in the first quarter as the Armagh champions spearheaded by the Corvins and Conor McKee took the lead 12-11 heading into the final ten minutes.

Fox made an immediate impact moments after a great McElhatton save from McKee.  Kelly levelled things for Eire Og and then Fox rammed home a super goal. Despite a brace of points from McKee, Fox racked up score after score to ease Carrickmore through.

The winners turned in a great display throughout. The Kelly’s Aiden, Justin and Jason, Aiden McKernan, Brendan Begley, keeper McElhatton and the wonderful all round forward threat underscored the victory.

Carrickmore : Gary Fox 1-5 Aidan Kelly 0-5, Conor Grogan 0-3 Johnny Munroe 0-2, Paul Hughes 0-1, Peader Daly 0-1, Sean Og Grogan 0-1
