As the Caman Tir Eoghain coaching sessions continue at the MUSA complex in Cookstown on Wednesdays the next phase of the programme aimed at developing hurling and camogie in the county was rolled out at St Ciaran’s school Ballygalwey on Monday night.

113 children from Primary school classes four to seven signed up for the six week programme at Ballygalwey with more expected next Monday evening. This level of interest matching the wonderful response at Cookstown where youngsters continue to develop their skill sunder the expert tutelage of Aidy Kelly. Coaches from established hurling and camogie clubs are assisting with the coaching duties and the programme has proved to be a massive hit.

Children learn the skills of the small ball game, over the six weeks, have fun, develop an understanding of the sport and also take home a hurl and sliotar allowing them to further hone  their skills ahead of a massive mini-blitz at the home of Tyrone GAA, Garvaghey that will feature hundreds of young hurlers and camogs at the start of April.

Peter Kerr chairman of the County Hurling Development Committee has been delighted with the response from Mid Ulster and the Clogher Valley. He is hopeful too that the programme will be rolled out in other areas as the year progresses. Mr Kerr was also full of praise for Coach Kelly and all the volunteer coaches who have supported the scheme so far.

The programme, one of several ideas emerging from a five year hurling and camogie strategy in Tyrone which was recently launched has caught the imagination in areas where the small ball game has been dormant in the main. “The future development of the sport lies in what we are doing now,” claimed Peter who is hopeful that the seeds sown now will see a clutch of new clubs formed in the coming years.

Registration for the St Ciaran’s programme will be accepted from children between 5-45pm and 6pm on Monday night.
