HURLING | Kickhams Too Strong for Eire Og
Sunday 25.10.2015
Creggan Kickhams are the Ulster Intermediate Hurling Champions for 2015 following a well deserved victory over Eire Og in Owenbeg this afternoon. The Antrim men grabbed control of the game in the opening thirty minutes and were eleven points ahead with 29 minutes gone 1-9 to 0-1. Creggan’s first half dominance was down to the number of times that they turned Eire Og over in the middle third of the pitch. In defence Martin Johnston and Thomas McCann were outstanding for the winners while up front Oran McCann, Conor McCann, Kevin Rice and Ciaran Small caused lots of problems for an under pressure Carrickmore defence.
Oran McCann had three points from play for Creggan in that opening half but he was ably back up by Kevin Rice and Sam Maguire. A Conor McCann goal in the 20th minute eased Creggan out to a seven point lead. Eire Og did rally in the final couple of minutes of the half to fire home a goal. A long ball into the box was knocked down by the Creggan keeper James Dougan but Sean Og Grogan smashed it first time to the net in the 30th minute. It was Carrickmore’s first score from play. At the break the scoreline read 1-9 to 1-2.
Eire Og with the words of team manager Geoffrey McGonigle still reeling in their ears began to grab control of the contest and by the 47th minute they had moved back to within five points of the Kickhams thanks to points from Justin Kelly, Aidy Kelly and Sean Og Grogan. The killer blow came in the 50th minute when livelier Conor Small snapped onto a ball following a good save from Conor McElhatton and found the Eire Og net. That score ended the game as a contest. Creggan went on to close out the game as Eire Og were reduced to fourteen men after substitute Dean Rafferty was sent off for what appeared to be a badly timed pull of the hurl. Creggan ran out 2-12 to 1-10 winners over Eire Og who unfortunately finished the game with only one starting forward scoring from play.
