Tyrone got their Division 3A Allianz National Hurling League campaign off to a winning start at Clones on Sunday afternoon with a 2-18 to 2-13 win over old rivals Monaghan.

New manager Kevin Ryan must have been delighted with the guts and determination his players displayed as they withstood a huge Monaghan push late in the game.

With Damien Casey once again in imperious form and Aidan and Justin Kelly working hard the Red Hands reached the break seven points in front 1-12 to 1-5. Tyrone’s goal in the first half came following a strong run by Conor Grogan before he squared the ball to Matthew Mulgrew who finished superbly to the net.

Monaghan came out fighting in the second half and an early goal from the stick of Mark Treanor had the gap down to three points. Buoyed by this the home side grew in confidence and following a run of fine points were very much on top. With three minutes  of normal time left to go The Farney men had narrowed the gap to a single point.

However when it was needed most Conor Grogan delivered and his goal put a stop to the Monaghan resurgence. The teams exchanged further points as the clock ticked away and the game finished with a five point victory and a morale boosting win for the Red Hands.
