Mayo 4-19

The Tyrone senior hurlers will head for the scenic route in this year’s Nicky Rackard Cup after losing to a strong Mayo side at Pairc Colmcille. The winning margin though would not be a fair reflection on this tie as Tyrone just ran out of steam allowing Kenny Feeney and super sub Joe McManus in for goals late on.

Tyrone led 10-9 at the break with Damien Casey’s accuracy impressive as he landed all but one of his side’s first half tally while Conor Grogan the only other player on target. The teams had been level on eight occasions but Kevin Ryan’s division three outfit turned in a massive shift. Mayo had Gary Nolan sent off on 33 minutes courtesy of a straight red card.

Quick fire points after the restart from Casey, Gerald Gilmore and Sean Og Grogan put Tyrone 0-13 to 0-9 up. Mayo remained patient and added points from McManus (0-2) and Shane Boland to close in on the home side.

Tyrone were very much in the game until the 51st minute when Boland finished to the net for the westerners. O’Sullivan then went close for a Tyrone goal seconds later but when Feeney tucked away a second Mayo goal the game was up. Mc Manus and Boland kept the points coming as Feeney and late on McManus scored further goals.
