Impressive Plunketts Through To Quarter Finals

Favourites Pomeroy moved impressively into the last eight of the Connollys of Moy Intermediate Championship. Goals in each half were enough to defeat All Ireland junior finalists Clogher in Eglish.
Pomeroy started brightly but it was Ciaran Bogue who opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. Hugh J Cunningham levelled but Ryan McCaughey had Clogher back in front within the opening five minutes. Frank Burns and Peter McGoldrick had Pomeroy in front but Barry McKenna had an opportunity for goal after clever work from McConnell but it was saved.
A Ryan Loughran lobbed effort dropped over the bar and Cunningham was again on target as Pomeroy began to turn the screw. A McNamee free stretched the lead before great vision from Ronan Duffin released Peter McGoldrick who gave McElroy no chance. Kieran McGeary added a further point as Pomeroy had hit 1-6 without reply. Bogue converted a free, Clogher’s first in almost twenty minutes before McCaughey added his second. Hugh J Cunningham added his third before points from Bogue and McCaughey saw Clogher trail 1-9 0-6, at the break.
Barry McKenna opened the scoring in the second half but Hugh McNamee’s two point free and a Marty Coyle free eased Pomeroy further in front. Conor Shields sweetly struck two pointer was cancelled out by Go Man of the match Hugh McNamee’s two pointer and Frank Burns kicked his second score as Pomeroy led by eight as the game entered its final quarter.
The game was effectively ended in the 49th minute when Kieran McGeary won the Clogher kickout, his through ball was centered to Marty Coyle to finish to the net. Ronan Duffin kicked a further score as the lead grew to thirteen.
Clogher never gave up and a free from Bogue a two pointer from Finbar McCaughey and a Ciaran Bogue goal narrowed the deficit but Ryan McCallan, Jude Campbell and Frank Burns were all on target before McNamee had the final say as Pomeroy ran out comfortable winners.
