Cookstown 3-15 Eglish 3-14
Before we begin we aren’t that sure that there’s any way of summing up what happened in Edendork on Saturday morning between Cookstown and Eglish minors. After what we just witnessed it might be better not to try.
However if we had to summarise it in one sentence. Cookstown, who never led in the game, came from eight points behind at half time and eight points down with ten minutes to go to kick a point in the fourth minute of injury time at the end of the second half, to lead for the first time in the game to win.
Playing with the wind Eglish opened the scoring through a point from midfielder Conor Holmes. By the quarter hour mark further points from Ronan Bradley, Brian Og McGuckin and Matthew F Daly eased the St Patrick’s men out to a 0-5 to 0-3 lead. Cookstown’s points by Eoin Long and an excellent 45 from Karol Wawrynkiewicz.
The opening goal of the game came in the 16th minute from Turlough Muldoon after a superb piece of build up play from the Eglish side. Additional point from both Matthew C and Matthew F Daly eased Eglish further ahead and two points from
Brian Og McGuckin and Ronan Bradley concluded the first scoring for the men in black. Cookstown added just two points from Eoin Long and Charlie Hawker. Half Time Score Cookstown 0-5 Eglish 1-10.
Understandably the Cookstown management had plenty to say at the break and after a considerable extended period of time in the changing rooms the Cookstown men reappeared.
Within four minutes of the restart Cookstown had halved the eight point deficit to four helped by a 33rd minute Luke Neeson penalty. By the 36th minute the Eglish lead was with again. Sheehan Fay powering through to hammer the ball to the Cookstown net. 1-6 to 2-11.
Cookstown responded through points from Eoin Long, Lorcan McMurray and Conal Sheehy to cut the deficit to five by the 45th minute. A stunning Conor Holmes goal in the 49th minute meant that the Eglish lead was restored to eight points once again.
Eglish looked a certainty to win but Cookstown had other ideas. A 50th minute Karol Wawrynkiewicz 45 brought Cookstown to within seven points. That was followed by a brilliant Luke Neeson goal in the 52nd minute to bring the deficit to three. By the 58th minute the gap was still four points but that was about to change in the 59th minute when Eoin Long hammered the ball to the Eglish net through a large body of Eglish defenders. One point game.
A fabulous run and fisted point from Luke Neeson in the 61st minute levelled the contest only for more drama to unfold in the fourth minute of injury time.
Conall Sheehy orchestrating space for himself inside the 45 and landing a long range winner just ahead of Niall Conlan’s final whistle.
Final Score – Cookstown 3-15 Eglish 3-14
