Big John Devine found himself in the thick of the action on Sunday afternoon against the students as Queens created several goal scoring chances against what appeared to be a ring rusty Tyrone team. Much was made of the fact that Johnny Lafferty was making his debut but for the Errigal keeper it was like starting all over again himself.
“I was a bit nervous alright because it is two years almost since I had played competitively for Tyrone so I was really looking forward to it.” The quietly spoken teacher had a fairly busy afternoon but was more than happy with the win and a return to competitive action.
“Queens looked very sharp early on and created a couple of goal chances but between Justy and myself we managed to keep them out. The goal at the start of the second half really woke us up and we played some good football after that. It was nice to get the win and that will give us a bit of confidence going into the second game.”
Next up for Tyrone will be a visit to Casement Park to take on Antrim in a game that will provide a different type of challenge for Mickey Harte’s young team. The whole panel is keen to build on Sunday’s win but for John Devine who has endured a difficult enough time with injury it is just nice to be back playing competitive football with the county.
