Junior League Camogie Title For Brocagh

The Tyrone Camogie League was split into junior and senior sections for the first time this year and they added to their competitions by having league final fixtures. The first Junior League final was held in Derrylaughan with league leaders Naomh Bríd Brocagh meeting Carrickmore’s Éire Óg.

While the loughshore team went in as favourites, both teams quickly demonstarted that they were up for the challenge. Faustina Canavan opened the scoring for Brocagh with the first score of the game. Both teams were very physical and the first of many frees saw Áine Tanney level and midfielder Orla Coyle land a point to put Eire Óg in front. Aimée Coyle made an impressive save but Grainne McDonald reacted quickest and struck for a point. Carrickmore hit the post and shortly afterwards Sally McCann put Brocagh in front once more.

Éire Óg were unable to make the most of their chances missing several frees and missing out on the chance of a goal. Player of the match Carrickmore’s Aoibhinn Daly converted a free from a yellow carded foul but her next effort was saved. Brocagh were rewarded for their persistence and hard work with a goal from O’Neill McKee. Éire Óg got to within a point but Sally McCann, who recently scored the winning goal with the last poc of the Nancy Murray Cup, encouraged her teammates to repeat this effort to take a three goal lead into the break.

Carrickmore made some changes but Brocagh were on a roll and confident on the ball. Éire Óg never gave up the fight but as the light faded it was difficult to guarantee the accuracy of chances for both teams. Orla Coyle sustained a shoulder injury in the last few minutes and, although her teammates took the last few scores, Brocagh ran out the deserving winners.
