There were First Round Junior Championship wins on Friday night in Omagh for Newtownstewart and Aghaloo over Castlederg and Clogher respectively. Both winners produced very accomplished displays to deservedly reach the quarter finals of the Donnelly Motors sponsored competition.

Aghaloo dominated the first half of the opening fixture to lead 0-9 to 0-1 at the break with Stevie Donnelly rolling back the years giving a virtuoso performance. Tiernan Donnelly, Brian Mc Kenna and Jody Mc Glone all got their names on the score sheet  as the border men eased into an eight point half time lead.

Clogher did stage something of a second half comeback when they hit 1-2 five minutes after the break as Ciaran Shields (0-1), Emmett Mc Connell (0-1) and Barry Mc Kenna (1-0) scored. However Aghaloo weathered that early storm and eased to a comfortable 0-17 to 1-6 win.

The second game of the night saw Newtownstewart and Castlederg reach the break level at 0-5 apiece. The Derg were somewhat one dimensional in attack relying heavily on Mark Corry for scores and creativity while a Kevin Gallagher inspired Newtown appeared even at that stage to look much more potent.

Ryan Mayse, Aidan Mc Sorley and Naomhan Mc Namee added points for Newtown as they dominated play before a well taken goal from sub Eoin Donnelly sealed the win. Mark Corry did score a fine point for his side to reduce the gap to four but further points from Brendan Boyle, Kevin Gallagher and Aidan Mc Sorley ensured it was Newtownstewart that made the quarter finals on a final score of 1-12 to 0-8.
