Rock and Castlederg enjoyed convincing wins at Newtownstewart in the opening round of the Hunky Dorys Junior Championship on Thursday evening. Rock produced a very impressive showing to defeat Drumquin 1-20 to 1-7 in a rather one sided game.

Rock dominated from the off and with Aidan Mc Garrity and Conor Mc Creesh in fine form they were 1-10 to no score in front twenty six minutes into the first half. Indeed Drumquin’s first score of the game only came in the twenty eighth minute of the opening period following a penalty from Frankie Mc Alynn. That score gave the Wolfe Tones hope but such was the gulf between the two sides that Rock dominated the second half and eased to a thirteen point victory. Diarmuid Carroll, Martin Mc Creesh, Liam Hoy all found the target for the winners. Drumquin battled gamely but found Rock’s pace and scoring power too much to handle. The Tones goalkeeper Enda Gormley stopped three or four certain goals to keep the scoreline respectable while Paul Sheridan, John Fahy and Mc Alynn fought right to the final whistle.

The second game was a much more keenly contested and closer encounter right from the off. The Derg began well and Mark Corry set down a marker with a fine opening point inside the first twenty seconds. Further scores from Brian Coyle and Conor Mc Callion helped keep them in front but Tiernan Donnelly’s accuracy from frees ensured the teams reached the break separated only by a point.

Unfortunately for Aghaloo they faced the second half without two of their key players having lost both Ruairi and Jody Mc Glone to injury during the opening thirty minutes. Their absence was keenly felt by the O’Neills but it made little difference to an increasingly confident Castlederg team. Sean Meehan, Caolan Harvey and Corry produced some sublime football and scores as they eased to a comfortable 1-17 to 0-9 win. Corry finished with 0-7 to his name in a man of the match showing but this was far from a one man show from Castlederg and they will go into the next round in confident mood after this fine team performance.
