An early Derrylaughan goal ultimately proved to be the difference at Plunkett Park in Pomeroy on Saturday afternoon as they edged past Loughshore neighbours Moortown to qualify for the Intermediate championship final were they will face the winner of the Moy v Greencastle replay.
The Kevin Barrys were against the wind in the first half but they enjoyed a dream start to the contest when wing half forward James Donnelly fired an unstoppable shot to the top right hand corner of the net after only four minutes. It proved to be their only score of the opening period but it was a significant one as Moortown failed to make use of the elements. It took Moortown twenty one minutes to open their account via Rian Smith but from there until the break they tagged on scores from Shea Lawn (2) and Matthew Conlon to lead 0-4 to 1-0 at the short whistle.
Smith opened the second half scoring before Derrylaughan got their first point of the game in the 35th minute thanks to a wonderful effort from out on the left wing from GO POWER man of the match Brian Kennedy. Kennedy then won a free which Tomas Carney converted before the latter hit a brilliant point from play. Moortown Captain responded with a neat score at the other end of the field but going into he final quarte Derrylaughan were two ahead thanks to efforts from Donnelly and the hard working Ciaran Quinn.
A shot from McLernon was tipped over the bar by Derrylaughan keeper James Kennedy to leave only the minimum between the sides with a dozen minutes left on the clock. The impressive Colm O’Hagan then landed an inspirational score from out on the left wing and almost immediately Carney registered to leave three between the sides. Moortown piled on the pressure but all they could must was a point from a Liam Lawn free as Derrylaughan deservedly advanced to the decider.
