Derrylaughan progressed to the semi finals of the Intermediate championship when they emerged worthy winners over a battling Owen Roes side at Plunkett Park in Pomeroy on Saturday afternoon. It was a game that the Kevin Barrys had to win on a couple of occasions as they found it difficult to put their opponents away.
The winners started brightly with points from James Donnelly, Tomas Carney (2) and Ciaran Quinn. A Cathal McShane free opened Owen Roes account the 12th minute before Carney and McShane exchanged points. A fine effort from Liam Gervin left four between the sides but in the 20th minute Owen Roes were right back in contention when Niall McAleer got on the end of a high delivery in from Conall McCormack to punch to the net. That was a blow to Derrylaughan but they closed out the first half with points from Donnelly and a brilliant effort from midfielder Brian Kennedy to lead 0-8 to 1-2.
Go Power man of the match Carney opened the second half scoring from a free before McShane cancelled that out t the other end of the field from a placed ball as well. Kennedy then embarked on another surging run tat led to a point but in the next attack Ronan McNulty squared the ball for Mickey Dooher to palm to the net from close range. McShane then landed a superb equaliser from out on the right to leave it all square by the 38th minute.
Derrylaughan looked to be in trouble as they were against the wind but in a ten minute spell they hit 1-4 without reply to ensure victory. Substitute Fergal McAliskey gave them a lead that they were never to lose and moments later another substitute, Danny Ball, found Carney who first timed the ball to the net. Carney tagged on another brace of points to take his personal haul to 1-6 and while Owen Roes had the final say through Dooher it was Derrylaughan who advanced to a last four meeting with either Moortown or Aghyaran.
