Killeeshil defeated Castlederg by eight points in this first round Hunky Dorys Junior championship match at Killyclogher this afternoon on a 0-18 to 0-10 score line. The foundations for this comprehensive win were laid in a strong first half showing where Seamus Mc Callen’s side built up a 0-10 to 0-4 lead. This was all the more impressive considering the hoops were playing into the teeth of a very stiff breeze. Gary Reilly top scored for the winners with seven fine points while Castlederg’s Mark Corry managed a similar return for his side.

Reilly and Shane Mallon gave their team a great start with a brace of points each as they moved into a four point lead with twelve minutes on the clock. Packie Mc Mullan was the instigator of most of Killeeshil’s first half scores as he produced a superb display in the middle of the field. Castlederg struggled to win primary possession in and around the midfield and when they did manage to get the ball into the forward line the roving Shane Mallon was on hand to intervene and turn defence into attack more often than not.

Mark Corry and Paddy Lynch battled hard to make an impact for their side and their endeavours were rewarded for long parts of the second half when the Derg finally cut loose and narrowed the gap to three points midway through the half. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the North Tyrone side because Killeeshil re-established control outscoring their opponents seven points to one in the closing eleven minutes to finish up convincing winners.
