Killeeshil are through to the last four of the Junior championship after an impressive display saw them ease past league champions Drumquin at Plunkett Park in Pomeroy on Sunday afternoon.
The winners had the wind at their backs in the first half but it was only really in the second quarter that they made it count on their way to an eight point advantage and holding the Wolfe Tones scoreless into the bargain. A Tomas Hoy free opened the scoring before superb efforts from play from Dillion and Michael O’Neill increased their advantage. There was seventeen minutes gone at that stage and Drumquin would have been happy with the way that things were going but all that was about to change. GO Man of the match Luke Donnelly landed a brilliant point from out on the right wing and after the superb Packie McMullan had converted a long range free Donnelly hit another beauty. It was all Killeeshil at this stage with the strong running of Eoin Neill to the fore and they tagged on points from Michael Carty and McMullan again to leave it 0-8 to 0-0 at halftime.
Donnelly opened the second half scoring before Drumquin finally got off the mark in the 34th minute via full back Paul Sheridan. Oisin Gormley then kicked a quality individual score before corner back Oisin McMenamin closed the gap further. Michael O’Neill and Gormley exchanged points before a free from the latter left it 0-10 to 0-5 going into the final quarter. You got the felling that a goal was going to be a massive score and it came the way of Killeeshil as substitute Jason Doyle found Donnelly who raced through before clinically finishing low to the net. Gormley converted a “45” but then it was game over as Doyle showed good strength to hold off his marker before racing through to finish with aplomb. Doyle kicked a point with McMenamin responding at the other end before Drumquin substitute Finnen Paterson hit a screamer of a goal into the top left hand corner of the net. It proved to be only a consolation score with Niall McAlynn and Michael O’Neill trading late points as Killeeshil booked a semi final date with Glenelly.
