Killeeshil Ladies Lift Grade One Minor Title.
On Saturday afternoon, Killeeshil ladies won the Grade 1 Minor Championship title at the expense of Clann na Gael at Gortin. The conditions were challenging and for the first five to ten minutes both sides were struggling to get into their rhythm as the Clan na Gael girls edged ahead by 0-3 to 0-1. Killeeshil then managed to put together a superb spell of team play orchestrated for the most part by outstanding defender Deirbhile O’Hagan. Good carrying and passing moves involving Vanessa Doyle, Faoiltiarna Keenan, Louise Kelly and Zoe Loughran ended with Zoe netting the ball. This was quickly followed by a sublime piece of personal skill from Louise Kelly which resulted in another goal. Aine Rafferty was to the fore in a move which resulted in a point from corner back Eilish Hamill. Before Clan an Gael had time to draw breath the Killeeshil trio of Zoe Loughran,Faoiltiarna Keenan and Louise Kelly added four more goals to leave the half time score 6-4 to 0-4 in their favour.
The second half saw Killeeshil playing with the breeze and, wind assisted, they scored some wonderful points through Genevieve Scullion, Grainne Rafferty and Anne Scullion. Zoe Loughran netted another goal as did Grainne Rafferty and although the Clann na Gael girls battled hard especially Aideen Traynor and Hannah Ward, they could find no way through the Killeeshil rearguard with some great defending by Cathy Donaghy in goals and Ursula Mc Gee, Una Hamill, Niamh Dinsmore, Meadhbh McGahan and Emma Mulgrew. Niamh Campbell, Louise Kelly and Grainne Rafferty linked together to record the final score of the game. At the final whistle the score line stood at 8-13 to 1-4, and Una Hamill graciously accepted the Minor honours on behalf of Killeeshil.
