Tyrone 1-2   Galway 2-20

Tyrone’s difficult national league campaign continued at Garvaghey on Sunday as they suffered a third consecutive heavy defeat and find themselves staring relegation to division two in the face. Already regraded to Intermediate championship football for this year it was hoped the league campaign would be about gaining experience for this very youthful Tyrone which today produced some decent football. They are showing signs of developing an understanding as a unit although again they struggled to find scores.

Niamh O’Neill opened the day’s scoring with a well taken early point for Tyrone  but by seventeen minutes it was 2-6 to 0-1 in favour of Galway. Rosin Leonard, Gillian O’Connor and Edel Concannon were among the points with Mairead Seoighe and Concannon scoring the goals.

Credit to Tyrone they enjoyed a better second quarter, were more stable at the back and created a handful of scoring chances. Grainne Rafferty, Tori McLaughlin and O’Neill all went close but without success. By the break Galway led 2-9 to 0-1.

At the back young Cailin McCann, Joanne Barrett, Christiane Hunter and Neamh Woods were made to work hard while the experienced Shannon Quinn and Emma Hegarty turned in a great afternoon’s work but the forwards struggled to break through a very solid Galway rearguard.

With the wind at their backs a quick 0-5 within six minutes of the restart sealed a comfortable win for Galway. Leonard, Seoighe and O’Connor were all on target for the westerners. Tyrone did improve in the final quarter and at times stretched the Galway defence. Siobhan Sheerin rattled in a fine goal moments after her first shot on target skidded wide after good build up play from Neamh Woods and Shannon Quinn while Hunter set up Niamh O’Neill for a late point which proved to be the final score of the day.
