Cavan 0-13

Tyrone 3-4

Maria Canavan flashed over a free deep into  injury time to secure Tyrone an opening day draw in their division two campaign in Cavan. It was the least Gerry Moane’s side deserved after a hard working performance on a difficult surface.

Tyrone were guilty of missing several chances while Cavan were reliant on the dead ball accuracy of Andrea O’Reilly who hit all 0-8 of her tally from frees. Four of those coming in a four minute spell at the start of the second half to cancel out the one point lead Tyrone had enjoyed at half time.

Niamh O’Neill scored a first quarter 1-1 as Tyrone took the game to Cavan. Emma Jane Gervin saw her shot go agonisingly wide and the Red Hands carved out several good openings. However they were reeled in by the 25th minute after a couple of soft frees resulted in points . The referee’s take on the tackle varied throughout the contest much to the frustration of a solid Tyrone defence who remained disciplined and composed throughout the hour.

Meabh Mallon rattled home an excellent second goal for Tyrone but late points from O’Reilly and Sheridan closed the gap to one. Colleen Mc Quaid who had impressed in the first half suffered a recurrence of a nasty shoulder injury  resulting in a Tyrone reshuffle. Cavan capitalised on this and O’Reilly tagged on     0-4 from frees without reply to put Cavan in front by three.

Tyrone eventually came to terms and their response was superb. O’Neill picked up the ball on the right  just inside her own half, stormed through and fired toward the net. Cavan goalkeeper Baugh saved only for the rebound to fall back to O’Neill who right footed the ball to the net.

Three points followed again for Cavan but Tyrone bossed the final ten minutes. Neamh Woods, Christiane Hunter and league debutant Aileen Touhey impressed at the back while up front Canavan, Sheerin, Rafferty and O’Neill created a host of opportunities.

Canavan found the range to close the gap to two but missed from close range on thirty minutes. Niamh Hughes stormed  through to score a fine point and at the  death Canavan kept her cool to score the equaliser. There was one last chance but a Canavan free from the right dropped short.
