LADIES| Championship Wins For Derg And Fianna
Saturday 23.07.2016
Galbally 1-5 Castlederg 0-13
A solid disciplined performance from an understrength Castlederg proved enough as they emerged with a five point win over Galbally to book their place in the last four of the junior championship at Clogher.
The Derg were missing the services of several key players but that failed to halt their progression. Shannon Lynch and Aimee Arnold were impressive in the middle while Lauren McSorley and Leah Lynch kept the scoreboard ticking over. Both teams were guilty of some poor finishing through the first half as scores from McSorley, Marisa Lynch and Leah Lynch (3) edged the Derg 5-3 ahead at the break, Eimear Tally (2) and Justina Mulgrew hit the scores for the Pearses.
Another Mc Sorley point immediately after the restart extended the Derg’s lead but Galbally found themselves level when Tally drilled home a penalty four minutes in. Try as they might though and despite plenty of ball they couldn’t get their noses in front.
Both teams traded points courtesy of Lynch and Walker before Castlederg hit a real key purple patch. McSorley, Leah Lynch (2) and Shannon Lynch rattled off scores to open a four point gap that could not be closed.
Further scores from Marissa and Shannon Lynch extended the lead to six and although Galbally pressed strongly during the closing stages they could not find the goals they needed and Castlederg progressed.
Coalisland 8-32 Aghaloo 0-2
The Fianna had little difficulty in advancing to the last four of the junior championship as they eased to a facile win over the youngest senior club in Tyrone ladies football Aghaloo. It was an historic occasion for the O’Neills who fielded with a mixture of youth and experience. The result may not have gone their way but it was certainly a learning curve for them. Niamh McKernan was in fine form hitting 2-11 of her side’s tally, Robinson, Corr, Quinn and Cummings also were among the goal haul.
Coalisland now face Edendork.
