Ladies Championship Wrap Up

There were wins in the ladies championship on Saturday for Macartans, Errigal Ciaran, Carrickmore, Drumragh, Clonoe, Edendork and Coalisland. In the senior section Macartans defeated Glenelly and Errigal accounted for Aghyaran. In the Intermediate division Carrickmore saw off the challenge of Trillick while Drumragh narrowly defeated Ardboe. In the Junior championship there were victories for neighbours Clonoe and Coalisland. The O’Rahilly girls got the better of Beragh while the Fianna defeated Strabane Sigersons.

Reigning champions Macartans started slowly against Glenelly but by half time they were in control. Chloe Mc Caffrey (4) and Slaine Mc Carroll (1-2)  were among the scores as Macs reached the break leading 1-8 to no score. Siobhan Sheerin (2) accounted for Glenelly’s second half scoring return while Chloe Mc Caffrey (3-4), Shauna Mc Girr (1-1) led the charge for the winners. Final score Macartans 5-15, Glenelly 0-2.

Trillick and Carrickmore served up an entertaining tussle before the Carmen girls edged it 3-8 to 2-6. The teams were tied at the break Trillick 1-2 Carrickmore 0-5. Shauna Mc Gurren got the Reds goal after a strong run from Dearbhaile Gallagher while Emma Brennan and Cathleen Kelly got their points. Gemma Begley (4) and Caitlin Gormley accounted for Carrickmore’s first half tally. The game swung on a Clodagh Munroe goal for Carrickmore straight from the throw in. Both sides swapped points with Cathy Mc Aleer on target for Carrickmore while Emma Brennan and Caitlin Kelly responded for Trillick. Midfielder Aoife Loughran hit Carrickmore’s second goal with ten minutes remaining but Trillick responded with a Mya Williamson goal and another point from Brennan. Carrickmore’s Mairead Mc Garrity wrapped up the win with her team’s third goal to leave the final score Trillick 2-6 Carrickmore 3-8.

Errigal got the better of a determined Aghyaran side winning 6-16 to 1-11. Cailin McCann bagged 2-3 while Briege Mullin (2-0), Claire Canavan (1-3), Elle McNamee (1-0) Maria Canavan (0-5), Lycrecia Donaghy (0-3) Aoife Horisk (0-1) and Michaela Moore (0-1) accounted for their scores. Aghyaran more than held their own in the first half trailing 9-6 at the break but Errigal cut loose in the closing ten minutes of the second half and their ability to plunder goals enabled them to pull away and win comfortably. Aghyaran had outstanding performances from Aoibheann Mc Hugh, Sasha Byrne, Aimee Coyle, Ciara Logue and Tara Mc Hugh.

Drumragh hosted Ardboe and after a tough hour of football emerged two point winners on a score of 1-9 to 1-7. Early points from Beth Donaghey and Clodagh Loughran gave the Sarsfields the perfect start but a brace of Ardboe points had the teams level on thirteen minutes. Ardboe edged 0-4 to 0-3 ahead before their wingback scored a goal to put them four clear. Points from Beth Donaghey and Niamh Woods sent the teams off at half time with the Lough Shore girls leading 1-4 to 0-5.

The second half saw Joanne Barrett and Josephine Quinn called into early action for the home side while scores from Donaghey and Loughran drew the sides level. A fine Ardboe score edged them ahead again but Loughran tied the game again with a fisted point before the sides swapped scores once more to leave the score Ardboe 1-5 Drumragh 0-8. Time was becoming a major factor and extra time a real possibility as the teams swapped points once more. The decisive score came late in the game when Kathryn Donaghey found the net for Drumragh after fine work from Neamh Woods and Beth Donaghy. Ardboe did reduce the deficit to two points with a further score but the Drumragh defence held out to secure the win on a final score of 1-9 to 1-7.

Clonoe hosted Beragh and both teams produced some high quality football before the O’Rahillys emerged 5-4 to 2 -11 winners.

Beragh opened the scoring with a point from Elizabeth McGarvey and followed up with another from Aishling McCann. Clonoe then hit back with a goal from Orlagh Gavin and bagged another 3 goals and a point through Maeve Mac Oscar, Brianna Quinn and Orlagh Gavin (1-1). Beragh tagged on a point just before water break to leave the score at that stage Beragh 0-3 Clonoe 4-1

Beragh rallied and hit back with a goal from Roisin McSorley and an own goal from Clonoe. They hit further points from Roisin McSorley and Eilish O’Neill before Clonoe registered the last score of the half with a point from Orlagh Gavin.

Halftime Beragh 2-5 Clonoe 4-2

Dervla Farley got the ball rolling with the first score of the second half for Beragh, with Eilish O’Neill hitting a long range point to bring the deficit down to a single point. Clonoe hit back with two points from the impressive Orlagh Gavin. Beragh’s reply saw a point from Sarah Louise Franey and two points from Eilish O’Neill to leave the score level at the 2nd water break Beargh 2-10 Clonoe 4-4

Beragh finally regained the lead after the restart with a point from Eilish O’Neill. Clonoe applied pressure but the Beragh remained resolute until they lost Sarah Gorman due to an injury. It was a huge blow to the Red Knights girls as Gorman was having an absolute stormer in defence. Beragh had a few chances to extend their lead but Clonoe delivered a real killer punch of a goal from Alicia Devlin right in the final minute to take the win.

Coalisland enjoyed a comfortable win over Strabane in their championship quarter final clash. Dominating the play from early on they raced into a 2-9 to 0-2 lead at the break. The Sigersons girls improved after the break with goals from Crystal Crossan (1-1) and Michaela Moss (1-2) but the Fianna were just too strong and ran out very convincing 5-16 to 2-5 winners.

Edendork were just too strong for Loughmacrory in their game on Saturday evening running out 3-11 to 1-7 winners after a strong second half showing. The sides were tied at the break Edendork 0-7, Loughmacrory 1-4 but Edendork used the elements and enjoyed a few slices of good fortune to win. Loughmacrory saw four shots rebound off the woodwork with two of them turning into counter attack goals for Edendork.
