Glenelly were deservedly crowned Ulster Club Intermediate Champions following a comprehensive thirteen point win over Monaghan side Donaghmoyne at Killyclogher on Sunday.

The Tyrone side were worthy winners and the foundations of the victory were laid during an impressive first half that saw them reach the break level in spite of playing into a very strong wind. Aisling O’Kane opened the scoring on eight minutes for Glenelly and although Donaghmoyne took the lead following two well worked scores Noel O’Kane’s showed their intent when Fionamarie Devlin bagged the first of four goals for the north Tyrone side.

That goal was created by the superb Siobhan Sheerin who tortured the Donaghmoyne defence throughout the game. Sheerin bagged her first score of the game sixteen minutes in but it was Donaghmoyne that finished the half strongly to reach the break level on a score line of Glenelly 1-3, Donaghmoyne 0-6.

The second half saw Glenelly show all their quality as they controlled the game from the off. Sheerin bagged a hat trick of second half goals and indeed had it not been for the heroics of the Donaghmoyne keeper Annmarie Burns the full forward could have finished the game with six goals.

Glenelly had heroes all over the park. Kellie Morris made several superb stops and two in particular in the first half ensured Donaghmoyne were denied the chance to build a lead. The back six were tenacious and determined throughout with Aofe Mc Connell, Michaela Morris and Cairmeal Mc Bride relentless in their pursuit of the ball. The half back trio of Catherine Morris, Edel O’Kane and Orla Harkin made sure the Donaghmoyne forwards had to work hard to earn possession. The midfield battle was clearly won by Eilis Kearney and Ellen Mc Cullagh who along with Aisling O’Kane ensured a plentiful supply of ball to the impressive forward unit.

Team captain Grace Donnelly worked her socks off along with Nicola Bradley and Aisling O’Kane while the full forward line of Sheerin, Patricia Morris and Fionamarie Devlin ran themselves to a standstill for the team.

Glenelly were worthy winners and in truth had the game tied up long before the conclusion of the game. However they continued to work right up to the final whistle denying their opponents time, space and opportunity all over the pitch.

Final score: Glenelly 4-8, Donaghmoyne 0-7.
