Ladies Junior League Finalists Decided
Friday 30.08.2024
Loughmacrory and Castlederg will meet in Sunday’s Junior league final after two dramatic semi-finals. There was noting between the participants in both games and Sunday’s final promises to be a cracker.
First half goals from Niamh Fox and Kerri Ward had Loughmacrory four points ahead of Glenelly on Wednesday by the break with the bustling Siobhan Sheerin tagging on the home goal. Through the second half Glenelly stormed back and a Maura Kirk goal levelled things. That score was the precursor to a tit for tat battle that swung to and fro with Oonagh Gallagher, Lisa Mc Aleer and Maria Kennedy sharing points.
Both teams had goal chances through the half and both goalkeepers were impressive but the loss of Glenelly full back Paula Sheerin to injury was a set back to the north Tyrone side as Gallagher sent over her late free the Lough got over the line.
Thursday’s game at Mc Hugh Park was equally thrilling. Inspired by Neamh Wood’s Drumragh bossed the first half leading by five at the break with Caoimhe Mc Carron finishing to the net with a healthy contribution of points from Beth Donaghy. The five home points from the deadly accurate Aoibhinn Mc Garvey , the hosts also had Lauren Gallagher sin binned.
A reshuffle by the Derg saw improvement and the introduction of Roisin Devlin after long term injury made an impact with Amelia Coyle moving out the park.
As Mc Garvey scored to close the gap they had Clodagh Catterson carded. Again nip and tuck on an excellent sod before Laura Mc Sorley crashed home and equalising goal and point with less than five minutes remaining.
In the fadng light the game went to extra time with the lead changing hands through the first period before ending all square again. The turning point came in the closing stages of the second period when Mc Sorley fired in a goal and Mc Garvey added a point to snatch a two point win.
Both games were great real advertisements for the junior game and all four will certainly fancy their chances in the Connolly’s of Moy championship before that Loughmacrory and Castledederg will go head to head in this eagerly anticipated league final on Sunday.
