Tyrone Ladies Intermediate League Final

Strabane Sigersons 5-9
Aghyaran St Davog’s 3-13

The ladies of Strabane and Aghyaran served up an excellent clash in the Tyrone Intermediate League final played at a splendid Marius McHugh Memorial Park Castlederg last Saturday with the game in the melting pot right until the final whistle.

Aghyaran were quick out of the blocks and raced into an early ten points lead with Aimee Coyle hitting a goal whilst the unfortunate Anna Mortimore also turned one into her own net. Aoife Byrne with a brace of points, Aoibhinn McHugh, Sasha Byrne and Aimee Coyle all added a point apiece with Ciara McGill getting the solitary Strabane score.

Sigersons rallied before the break with points from Elliejay McMenamin, Tori McLaughlin, Michella Moss and Leona Houston all on target although the St Davog’s also added points via a brace from Stacey Dolan and one from Aoibhinn McHugh to lead by nine at the break.

The game was turned on its head at the start of the second half as Strabane hit 3-1 without reply to take their first lead of the contest. Lorraine Conwell was in blistering form with two well struck goals and Zara O’Hagan also hit a major and Ciara McGill fired over a point.

Aimee Coyle was in inspirational form for Aghyaran and she responded with a goal and two points but once again Sigersons fought back with Ciara McGill scoring a brace of points and Rachel Brennan hit a fourth goal. Aimee Coyle with two points from free kicks restored the Aghyaran lead with time running out and when Lorraine Conwell scored a point from a free kick for Strabane in the last minute it looked as though the game would go to a replay.

A last-ditch Strabane attack saw Tori McLaughlin launch a long ball into the Aghyaran goalmouth and somehow the ball ended up in the back of the net. St Davog’s replied with yet another point from Aimee Coyle but it was too little too late as the Sigersons ladies somehow managed to clinch the title after what was a disastrous start for them.

Both sides deserve great credit for the entertainment provided to the large crowd in attendance and Strabane can now look forward to playing at Senior level in 2017.
