Tyrone find themselves still in search of a first league win after a 3-12 to 0-7 loss to Cork In Fermoy on Sunday. It’s a result though that doesn’t reflect the work-rate and battling qualities of an under-strength Tyrone team that fielded minus the likes of Shannon Quinn, Emma Hegarty and Niamh O’Neill.

It does not get any easier for the Red Hand girls as next up comes Dublin before what promises to be a massive clash with Laois at home. That game could well decide Tyrone’s place in the top flight.
With home advantage and laced with quality Cork were always in control and led 2-5 to 0-4 at the break with Valerie Mulcahy finding the net eight minutes in after Gemma Begley had given Tyrone an early lead. Within minutes Orlagh Farmer rattled in a second goal and the die was cast.

Tyrone, to their credit were stubborn and forced the Cork side into snap decisions. Neamh Woods at centre half back and Christiane Hunter operating at sweeper played well. Tori McLaughlin dropped into a more accustomed defensive role and turned in a good display while Gemma Begley was very effective at midfield before Cork eventually took charge.

With the Rebel girls finding their rhythm Tyrone chances were few and far between. They managed to add a further 0-3 in the half though with Begley, Emma Smyth and Joline Donnelly on target. However they had limited second half chances as Cork showed all their class but despite the scoreline they turned in a brave battling display.

Cork added a raft of points in the half but the tally could have been a lot worse. Once again goalkeeper Lynch pulled off a couple of fine saves and McLaughlin and Hunter made two key interceptions to stop certain goals. Mulcahy found the net for goal number three as she finished the day with 2-5 as Cork pressed home their advantage.

Scorers for Tyrone: Gemma Begley 0-3 (0-2f), Grainne Rafferty, Joline Donnelly, Emma Smyth and Nicola Donnelly  0-1 each.
