Ulster Ladies Minor Championship

Aontroim 3-7 Tír Eoghain 9-13

Tyrone Ladies Minors made it two out of two in their Ulster Championship campaign with a convincing win over Antrim at the Dub Playing Fields, Belfast on Sunday.

The Red Hand girls got off to a great start going into an early 2-2 lead with a goal and a point from Chloe McCaffrey, a goal from Emma Brennan and a point from Dearbhlá McDonald. Antrim responded with a goal and a point to remind Tyrone that they were in this game but McCaffrey added another goal followed by a well taken point from McDonald to restore Tyrone’s advantage. The Red Hand girls were enjoying the majority of possession but were unable to convert this to scores, recording several wides after some great support play to create the scoring opportunities. The Saffron girls then took advantage of a loss of concentration in the Tyrone defence to score two goals in quick succession to keep them in the contest. The outstanding Dearbhlá McDonald added a goal to settle the Tyrone side with Caoleann Conway adding a point. As the end of the first half loomed both sides traded points with Sasha Byrne recording her first two points of the day to send Tyrone in leading by 6 points at half-time.

Tyrone started strongly again in the second-half with Sasha Byrne and Dearbhlá McDonald rattling the back of the Antrim net to extend their lead to 12. Byrne got another goal and a point with McDonald adding a point from play before Antrim got their first score of the second-half. McDonald added to her tally converting a penalty after Aoibhinn McHugh was upended while bearing down on goal. Caitlin Kelly and Chloe McCaffrey added points for Tyrone while Antrim notched up two points from play. Sasha Byrne recorded her final score of the day with a point while her Aghyaran teammate Aimee Coyle launched a blistering shot into the Antrim net before scoring a wonderful long rage point. Antrim got a late consolation point before Chloe McCaffrey scored a point to finish up the game and another good team performance from Tyrone.

Although happy with the victory Tyrone Captain Sinead Donnelly said after the game, “We are delighted to win and happy with the second-half performance, but we are disappointed with the way we let Antrim keep in touch with us in the first-half. We will push forward now to the Down game and work hard on the things that didn’t go that well today”.
