Clan na nGael 3-13 Sigersons 2-3.
A Mairead Conwell haul of 0-5 at the start of the second half helped Clan pull away from a stubborn Strabane Sigersons side at Aghyaran on Thursday evening and in turn secure a place in the intermediate decider.
The first half had been a close affair with only four points between the sides at the break. Three quick fire Clan points from Anne Daly and Hannah Ward (0-2) were cancelled out by Ciara McGill’s goal. Although a Hannah Ward goal though gave Clan the advantage Strabane were very much still in the tie with Laura Coyle, Lorraine Conwell, and Michaela McGarrigle playing well.
However that quick fire burst of scoring from Clan Na nGael without reply after the break ended the Sigersons’ hopes with Mairead Conwell’s personal tally added to by Carol Dooher.
To their credit Strabane continued to battle and Lorraine Conwell’s 1-2 cut the gap significantly. Hopes of a Sigersons comeback however were dashed when Anne Daly’s point settled the Clan nerves before a late flurry of scores, including an O’Neill goal and 1-1 from the industrious Ward eased them to a ten point advantage.
Sigersons turned in a credible performance but the accuracy and quality of a fancied Clan were evident throughout. Veteran Anne Daly was a driving force, the Conwells, Mairead scored 0-7, Ward (2-3) Susan McShane and Angie McShane were all superb for the winners. Having qualified for the final in such convincing style they will certainly fancy their chances of lifting the title now.
The second semi-final between Ardboe and Glenelly is fixed for Saturday at Rock. Other Clan scorers Anne Daly 0-2, Carol Dooher 0-1, Aishling O’Neill 1-0
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.
St Macartans meanwhile advanced to the senior championship final without kicking a ball. Opponents Omagh, despite their best efforts, were unable to field. A last minute call by the St Endas Club was made on Wednesday when it emerged a handful of players were not available. This is a major body blow to them but guaranteed a final spot for the champions without the worry of playing a game.
The remaining senior FC semi-final is fixed for Saturday with Errigal Ciaran facing last year’s finalists Carrickmore at Killyclogher, it promises to be a thriller.
