Tyrone Ladies successfully defended their Ulster Intermediate title on Friday evening in Clonmore when they defeated Down 0-17 to 0-3.

The foundations for the win were laid during an impressive first half display that saw Gerry Moane’s side hit nine fine points. Full forward Niamh O’Neill and veteran Gemma Begley landed six between them while Aine and Maria Canavan also managed to get among the scores. Indeed Tyrone could have been even further ahead had they not taken the wrong options when well placed in front of the goals on several occasions.

Down worked very hard against the breeze in the first half but they were too reliant on the threat posed by Kyla Trainor to really trouble Tyrone whose defence was rock solid. Full back Joanne Barrett, centre half Shannon Cunningham and wing back Neamh Woods marshalled the rearguard superbly restricting Down to only a handful of chances over the course of the game.

With the wind in their backs in the second half most spectators were expecting Down to make a real game of it but it was the Red Hand girls who dominated the second period. Neamh Woods and Niamh O’Neill kept Tyrone on the front foot from the off and any chance of a Down comeback disappeared as O’Neill, Begley, Rebecca Mc Crory and Maria Canavan all added points.

The Mourne girls looked a tired side long before the end as their first half exploits caught up with them and Tyrone went on to seal a well deserved fourteen point win.

Tyrone scorers: Gemma Begley 0-7, Niamh O’Neill 0-4, Maria Canavan 0-3, Aine Canavan 0-2 and Rebecca Mc Crory 0-1.
