Mayo 4-17

Tyrone 0-4

It was the end of the road for Tyrone as they suffered a humiliating loss to a Sarah Rowe inspired Mayo at Carrick On Shannon on Saturday. The Red Hand girls showed some improvement at the back from their loss to Armagh but they were held to just four points of their own against a well organised Mayo defence and that return was never going to be enough.

Rowe was in unstoppable form scoring 2-9 for her side in an impressive display while Tamara O’Connor and substitute Deirdre Doherty also found the net for Peter Leahy’s dominant side. O’Connor scored her goal within thirty seconds of the start signalling the westerners attacking intentions.

The loss means Tyrone are out of the championship and will take the mini- close season to get themselves focused for a genuine crack at promotion from division two next season.

Mayo dominated from the start and after kicking a wide from the first attack  they turned over Laura Kane’s kickout and O’Connor hit the net with a good, low finish. Fortunately for Tyrone they failed to build on that lead in spite of enjoying plenty of possession as their accuracy in front of goal left a lot to be desired.

No one was immune as shots dropped short and sailed wide for much of the first half. Following that inefficiency, Tyrone got on the board when Emma Brennan gathered a loose clearance and pointed, but that 11th minute point was their only score of the first half.

A free from Rowe stretched Mayo’s lead before she pointed from play and just after the water break, Mayo powered ahead when Aileen Gilroy, Rachel Kearns and Sinead Cafferkey all combined to send Rowe in for a quality goal. Grace Kelly added a point as Mayo opened up a 2-5 to 0-1 lead.

Mayo were far more ruthless in the second half. Rowe added four more points by the 36th minute, Fiona Doherty  tagged on a score which put them 2-10 to 0-1 clear, before Grainne Rafferty finally ended 29 scoreless minutes for Tyrone with a free from out on the left.

Deirdre Doherty made a real impact from the bench and after Rowe scored her second goal Doherty rattled Mayo’s fourth major direct from a free two minutes later. Emma Brennan was yellow carded late on but it had little impact on the tie as Mayo enoyed a more than comfortable win with Kelly and Rowe adding further points.

For Tyrone it was a miserable day as they now  take a rest, regroup, refocus and be energised for next year.
