LIDL Ladies National League Division Two

Tyrone 4-11
Waterford 2-10

Despite a last minute switch from Drumragh to Garvaghey Tyrone opened their Lidl National League campaign with a more than effective win over Munster senior champions Waterford. Maria Canavan turned in a player of the match display for a changed looking Tyrone who were missing several regulars from last year’s race to the all Ireland final.

Young Canavan had played on Saturday for Ulster as they retained the Post Primary Schools inter provincial series but managed a respectable 1-5 as Chloe Mc Caffrey, Grainne Raferty and Niamh Hughes also fired in goals while once again Neamh Woods, Shannon Lynch and Joanne Barrett played well at the back.

Tyrone got off to a quick start with a brace of points through Grainne Rafferty and Emma Hegarty before Roisin Tobin pointed for Waterford who then netted the game’s opening goal ten minutes in courtesy of Eimear Fennell.

Rafferty found the net with seventeen minutes on and the home side tagged on points from Chloe McCaffrey and Maria Canavan(0-2) from open play. By the break though Waterford led by a point 1-6 to 1-5 with Tobin, Katie Murray, Aileen Wall, Eimear Fennell and Sinead Ryan landing points.

Niamh Hughes was sin binned during the third quarter and Tyrone were forced to dig deep at the back as the visitors threatened. Goalkeeper Shannon Lynch indeed was called upon to make a fine double save that included a penalty stop from Fennell.

Maria Canavan pointed a free as Slaine McCarroll, Gemma Begley and Emma Smith all landed points with Tyrone turning in a good shift.

Waterford netted a second goal from Michelle Ryan but three final quarter goals secured the win for Tyrone. McCaffrey, Canavan and Hughes eased the hosts home for a well deserved win on the opening day of the season.

Gerry Moane’s side head to Sligo on Sunday for their next fixture. The Yeats girls lost to Clare at the weekend and will not relish facing the Red Hands after two defeats last season in league and championship.
