LADIES| U-16s Come Up Short Against Louth.
Friday 15.07.2016
Iniskeen Monaghan was the venue for this week’s Tyrone v Louth LGFA U16 all Ireland semi-final.
Tyrone began well with Bronagh McKenna opening the scoring from open play. Louth responded with three points with one from play and the other two from frees.
The Red Hand girls were struggling to settle but Collins and Murray in midfield kept a good supply of ball into the forwards. Seaney and Gallagher linked well before Gallagher was fouled resulting in a goal from Aoife Byrne’s free.
It was end to end football as Louth replied with two points of their own. The Tyrone halfback line of Mc Mahon O’Neill and O’Hagan were very much on top ensuring a steady supply of good quick ball to the forwards. Elly J Mc Menamin was causing havoc in the Louth defence linking with McKenna who scored a point but almost immediately pressure from Louth saw them hit two points from frees.
A foul on Orla Warnock gave Byrne another opportunity while Gallagher again scored from open play. Just on the stroke of half-time Louth responded with a point to leave the score at the break Tyrone 1-05 Louth 0-08.
Louth opened the second half with two points from play while Tyrone lost their midfield pair of Murray and Collins following injuries to both players. Sub Orla Mulgrew hit a point from open play.
In defence Mossey, O’Hanlon, and Mc Guinness were being tested by the strong running Louth attack with Caoimhe Meeke making several great saves that prevented Louth from increasing their lead.
The Wee County eventually found the net following a well worked move. Tyrone responded with the hard working Mc Menamin getting the kick out before passing to O’Hagan who drove through the packed Louth defence to score a super goal.
O’Hagan then fired over a point for Tyrone as the Ulster side began to get on top. Louth responded with three further points. Tyrone continued to push hard for the win as points from Byrne O’Hagan and Seaney brought the teams level.
With time running out and Tyrone pushing forward they were caught on a counter attack which resulted in Louth hitting the net for their second goal. This score spurred Louth on and they added three further points in injury time to win.
Final Score: Louth 2-16 Tyrone 2-10.
