Tyrone manager Mickey Harte has named one debutant in the team that will take to the field for the first game in the 2012 season. Sunday’s opening fixture in the Dr Mc Kenna Cup will see Urney’s Johnny Lafferty line out at full forward and be given the chance to reproduce the sort of form that made him his club’s outstanding forward for the past two seasons.

It has been quite a number of years since an Urney player represented Tyrone and the last one to win a medal with the county was Paul Bogle as a minor in 1988. The versatile and very classy Lafferty will discover that the pace of county football is considerably quicker and sharper than division two club football in Tyrone but hopefully he will adapt quickly. He has waited a while for his chance and will be keen to show that he is capable of staking a claim for a place on the squad not just for the Mc Kenna Cup but more importantly later in the year as well. The Mc Kenna Cup is the ideal platform for him and Healy Park is a pitch which has served him well in the past.

Sunday’s game is one many Tyrone supporters have been looking forward to for quite a while now and none more so than the followers of Urney. They will be hoping to see one of their own succeed at county level and they fully believe he is capable of doing that. Sunday will not make or break his county career but it will give him a fair idea of how capable he is and how far he still has to go. Let’s hope he makes a good and a winning start.
