Last Gasp Mc Garrity Point Sends Carrickmore Through
Friday 06.09.2024
The Tyrone senior championship came to life on Friday night following a top class contest between two of the county’s big hitters as Carrickmore came back from four down to send Dromore out of the competition on a score line of 0-11 to 0-10.
The match winning point came right at the end of three additional minutes during which Carrickmore probed for an opening and worked hard to keep possession. Eventually Lorcan Mc Garrity showed composure and unerring accuracy to send the ball over the bar and seal the win.
It was Dromore who led by three points at the interval after closing out the first half on top. Declan McNulty opened the scoring with a superb effort with the outside of his boot before a Peter Teague free doubled their advantage.
Aidan Fullerton opened Carrickmore’s account in the 7th minute but a McNulty free cancelled that score out. In the next attack an outstanding Brian Conway score reduced the deficit before Ciaran McCoy made it 0-4 to 0-2.
A Danny Fullerton mark closed the gap again before Championship debutant Brian Gallagher put two between the sides again in the 20th minute. Little separated the teams and it was no surprise when a brace of Danny Fullerton points levelled matters. Dromore though put their foot on the gas with Niall Sludden notching two fine points either side of one from brother Oran to leave it 0-8 to 0-5 at the short whistle.
Dromore began the second half strongly and a Peter Teague score stretched the lead to four points. Carrickmore eventually got their first score of the half from an Aidan Fullerton effort and within three minutes the gap was down to two. Mc Garrity and Fullerton reduced the deficit to a single point as Dromore’s previously imperious defence began to creak. Emmett O’Neill steadied the nerves and put his side 0-10 to 0-8 in front but with substitute Martin Penrose leading the siege Carrickmore pinned the Blues back inside their own half.
Brian Conway made it a one point game and when Lorcan Mc Garrity fired over the equaliser a draw looked the most likely outcome. Carrickmore however had other ideas. As Dromore tried to play the ball out Carrickmore turned over possession and retained the ball superbly as Dromore ran out of ideas. Then came the match winning moment when county man Lorcan Mc Garrity floated over a superb point right at the death to send Noel Slane’s side through to the quarter finals on a final score of Carrickmore 0-11, Dromore 0-10.
