Trillick put the disappointment of last Saturday’s late late draw with Ardboe behind them tonight at Healy Park with a 2-9 to 0-10 win over the Lough Shore lads in the first round Hunky Dorys senior championship replay. Once again Mattie Donnelly, Niall Donnelly, Rory Brennan and Niall Gormley were to the fore as the Reds began in blistering fashion. Trillick were 1-3 to no score in front after twelve minutes with Niall Gormley’s pace and movement causing all sorts of problems for the Ardboe defence.
However that was as good as it got for the Reds in the first half as they failed to score again until Mattie Donnelly hit the first score of the second half two minutes after the break. In between that Ardboe sent over five super points to close the gap to one at the break. Indeed had Mick Hagan shown a bit more composure on the stroke of half time Ardboe could well have gone in level at the break. Half time score Ardboe 0-5, Trillick 1-3.
The first half saw some fine football, close marking and great scores and with little between the sides and a place in the quarter final at stake the pace increased after the break. Ardboe responded to Trillick’s fine start with points from John Mc Conville, Tommy Mc Guigan and Kyle Coney to lead 0-9 to 1-5 midway through the second half. Sensing the game was getting away from them Trillick moved Richard Donnelly into midfield and the whole dynamic of the match changed. The former county minor excelled in the last fifteen minutes and won vital possession for the Reds. They hit 1-4 in the closing quarter o Ardboe’s single point with their goal coming from a piece of opportunist play by the impressive Niall Donnelly in the fifty seventh minute to seal the win.
Tempers flared late on but Trillick were not to be denied their well deserved victory and Mattie Donnelly wrapped the win up with a fine individual score right on the stroke of full time to leave the final score Trillick 2-9, Ardboe 0-10.
