McElduff and Fox leading Tyrone medal assault at world handball championships
Conor McElduff and Mairead Fox have successfully led the Tyrone challenge for gold medals so far at the 2018 world handball championships in Minnesota as the county’s Team Ireland duo secured the men’s open and girls 15 and under singles titles in the wallball championship finals on Tuesday.
Conor became the first ever Irish winner of the men’s open singles gold medal with a smooth victory over American Vlad Klym. The Irish and European number one cemented his status as the best one wall exponent that Ireland has ever produced with an historic triumph at the University of Minnesota.
Conor later missed out on another gold medal when he teamed up with new world under 23 champion Paudi Quish of Limerick as the Irish pair went down to the host country in a tiebreaker.
Mairead Fox also secured another major singles title for Team Ireland when the Loughmacrory star lived up to her number one seeding with  victories over opposition from Carlow, Clare and Tyrone to claim gold in the girls 15 and under division, with the final against Clodagh Munroe proving to be one of the best matches of the world championships so far. Mairead’s success is Tyrone’s first ever world girls singles title in the 15 and under grade.
Eilise McCrory ensured a third singles title for Tyrone in the wallball championships when she impressively captured the Ladies B title.
Tyrone also played a part in three world doubles successes on Tuesday and it was a very proud day for the Munroe family from Carrickmore when Cahir, Clodagh and Shea teamed up with partners from Galway and Kilkenny to take the honours in their respective grades.
Tyrone players also secured a number of runner up prizes in the wallball competitions and the unluckiest finalist was Sean Kerr who suffered an agonising 11-9 tiebreaker defeat at the hands of Tipperary star James Prentice.
Niall Kerr and Eamon McCrory also went close in the masters doubles category, while mother and daughter team, Michelle Warren and Michaela McCartan, picked up the Ladies B doubles silver medals.
Clodagh Munroe and Dearbhail Fox also earned silver medals in the girls junior singles competitions, with Dearbhail adding another silver in the girls 13 and under doubles final.
All attention now switches to the world 40×20 championships which are now underway in Minnesota and will conclude on Sunday 19th August. And Tyrone’s 22 strong representation at the worlds are expected to be among the medals again.
