There were mixed fortunes for the large contingent of young Tyrone players who were in action in Saturday’s packed programme of Ulster juvenile finals in Kingscourt.
Tyrone recorded some impressive victories on the day and among the first time provincial winners were the under-12 trio of Cormac Munroe, Antoin Fox and Ronan Curran.
Carrickmore player Munroe collected his first Ulster title when he defeated Monaghan’s Caolan Myles in an entertaining under-12 singles final, Cormac having to come from behind to secure the opening game 15-13, before taking control early in the second and winning in two straight games.
There was also great joy for Loughmacrory pair, Ronan Curran and Antoin Fox, who had a tricky opening spell against Monaghan’s Justas Dambinskas and Eoghan McGinnity, but they settled to the task well and won the first game 15-8, before pulling away impressively in the second game to secure the under-12 doubles title.
Tyrone also had Ulster champions crowned in many of the other doubles categories, including Matthew McCartan and Shane McCrystal at under-14 level, Jack Campbell and Pauric Mullan in the under-15 grade, and the highly fancied pairing of Johnny Woods and Ryan Mullan at under-16.
Emer Kerr and Ciara Mullan enjoyed a great win in the girls under-12 doubles decider and the girls’ provincial under-16 doubles title was secured by the strong Brackey/Loughmacrory combination of Maeve McElduff and Aoife Kelly.
There are still some Ulster finals which have to be played, with Sean Kerr (under-14) and Turlough Clarke (under-13) hoping to add two more singles titles to the Tyrone roll of honour.
