Aodh Ruadh and Errigal served up an entertaining draw in Round 3 of the Ladies Division One league on Wednesday night in Killyman. This game was played in atrocious weather conditions including very high winds but while this led to several mistakes from both sides the players endeavoured to serve up a quality game.
Aodh Ruadh settled well and created some good scoring chances but it was Errigal who were more accurate scoring opening points from Sarah Connolly and Louise Loughran. Dungannon hit back with scores from Mary Cassidy and Emma Jane Gervin and then went on to take the lead with Mary Cassidy scoring her 2nd point of the game after some excellent forward play from Niamh Hughes and Carol McGlinchey. Errigal responded with a further point from Shannon Quinn but it was the Dungannon side that went in front again through Aoife McGahan who opted to tap the ball over the bar when released by Niamh Hughes. Marian Vinncent and Orla Mallon were dominating the Dungannon defence and good play from both released the lively Niamh Hughes who found the ever dangerous McGahan unmarked on the 20 metre line and she duly despatched a great shot to the roof of the Errigal net to make it 1- 5 to 0 – 3 with eight minutes to go in the first half. A fine build up involving Carol McGlinchey, Eileen Murtagh and Aoife McGahan resulted in a second point for wing forward Emma Jane Gervin but then some wayward shooting from Dungannon and wasted possession gave Errigal renewed hope. Full forward Sarah Connolly got on the end of a Shannon Quinn delivery and went on a run which ended in a great shot to the back of the Aodh Ruadh net. At half time the score stood at 1- 5 to 1 – 3.
Errigal came out strongly after the restart and scored points from the boot of Nuala Carlin followed by a free from Sarah Connolly. An Errigal sinbinning led to a period of Aodh Ruadh dominance once more and in this time there was some great all round play from Orla Mallon and Nicola Rafferty which resulted in the Dungannon side going in front again when Aoife McGahan once more hit the net from close range. Back came Errigal however with a free from Sarah Connolly. Dungannon responded once again and created some good opportunities with Pauline Barker making the most of a mistake in the Errigal square to drive the ball home for Aodh Ruadh’s 3rd goal to establish a 5 point advantage.
With equal numbers resumed Errigal piled on the pressure and won a penalty which Sarah Connolly coolly slotted home to leave 2 points in the game with 5 minutes remaining. Dungannon were defending doggedly with Orla Mallon, Marian Vincent and Aileen Fox putting in great tackles but the period of Errigal pressure paid off with both Connolly and Quinn getting the 2 scores required to draw the game. At this stage referee Alan Richardson called time on an entertaining and absorbing game. For the Aodh Ruadh side there were good performances from Marian Vincent and Orla Mallon in defence. They were ably supported by both midfielders Mary Cassidy and Nicola Rafferty and the pick of the forwards were Niamh Hughes and Aoife McGahan. Errigal were best served by Sarah Connolly, Shannon Quinn and Siobhan Garry.

Drumragh minor ladies beat Rock 2-7 to 3-1 in the Grade 3 League at Clanabogan on Tuesday evening in a game of two halves. The Sarfields’ girls led 1-6 to 0-1 at half-time with Katherine McCrory scoring 1-4, Rachel Cleary 0-1 and Autumn McLaren 0-1 getting the other scores. Rock played much better in the second half scoring three goals. But Drumragh’s defence stood up well to a lot of pressure with Joanne Barrett in particular outstanding. Goalkeeper Steph O’Donnell also performed very well for the winners making a couple of good saves. Claire McSorley got Drumragh’s second goal while McCrory added another point.
