Murphy Gaelic Gloves Intermediate Championship

Clonoe O’Rahilly 4-13

Dromore St Dympna’s 3-11

Four second half goals put Clonoe through to the semi-final of the intermediate championship as they beat a fancied Dromore at Garavghey. Orlagh Gavin hit 1-10 of the O’Rahilly’s tally as they caused a major upset to tee up a last four outing against Trillick.

Dromore had dominated the first half after Clonoe hit the first point of the night through Naomi Donnelly.  The St Dympna’s led 1-8 to 0-6 at the break with Niamh Mc Govern finding the Clonoe net and points from Emma Smyth and the impressive Shaunagh Mc Nabb providing them with an excellent platform for the second half. Clonoe had rallied in the second quarter but the St Dympna’s finished strong to lead by five.

The Rahilly’s had lost goalkeeper Louise Fitzgerald to injury in the first quarter, her replacement Alisha Coyle made two fine saves in the first period and was inspired in the second half as Dromore threatened to push on for the win.

As Gavin points kept Clonoe in the tie Sinead Hanna, Brianna Quinn and Aoife Coyle worked hard throughout. Three quick fire second half Clonoe  points had closed the gap to two points.  Dromore responded and a brace of points edged them clear while Coyle made a couple of fine stops. Gavin points left two between the teams again before Aine Heagney’s probing long ball found the Dromore net as the Rahilly’s took the lead for the first time since the night’s opening point.

Within a minute Meave Mc Oscar also found the net from distance with two further Gavin points putting Clonoe ahead by six on 52 minutes. Dromore substitute Ciara Mc Mahon made an immediate impact with a cracking goal. Bronagh Mc Oscar though replied with a third Clonoe goal as the game entered injury time.

Former County attacker Emma Smyth tagged on a point and Mc Mahon’s second goal hauled Dromore back to within two points but a cracking goal from Orlagh Gavin deep into injury time ended any hopes of a dramatic comeback as the O’Rahilly’s secured a memorable win.

In the junior championship Rock advanced to the last four as they beat a battling Moortown 2-6 to 2-2 on a low scoring contest at Stewartstown.
